The World At Minds End is one of those albums that spent decades circulating as a whispered recommendation among collectors of obscure jazz-rock and fusion. Recorded by Bristol-based seven-piece Skywhale and originally released in 1977, it would remain the band's only album, leaving behind a singular document of ambitious British fusion that disappeared into rarity for many years.
Built entirely around instrumental compositions, the album combines electric guitar, keyboards, dual woodwinds, percussion and violin into a rich and constantly shifting sound. The six extended tracks balance tightly arranged ensemble passages with room for improvisation, allowing the musicians to explore melodic themes from multiple angles without losing momentum. Reviewers have often highlighted the album's energy, inventive arrangements and the way different instruments continuously exchange and develop ideas throughout each piece.
There are touches of classic jazz-rock fusion, progressive rock and even hints of the melodic sophistication associated with British progressive music of the era, but Skywhale never settle into a single formula. From the opening "Epicure" to the expansive title track and the closing "Boggies", the album moves with a restless creativity that has helped it earn cult status among fusion enthusiasts despite its long obscurity.
This 2025 remastered reissue is presented on 180g vinyl and limited to 200 numbered copies. Housed in a single jacket with a two-page full-color printed insert, black polylined inner sleeve and hype sticker. Originally recorded at Mushroom Studios, Bristol.
