Description

Emerging from Stockholm in the mid-1980s, Candlemass became one of the defining forces behind what would later be known as epic doom metal. Built around the songwriting of bassist Leif Edling, the band slowed heavy metal down to a monumental pace, combining massive riffs with dramatic melodies and a solemn, almost ritualistic atmosphere.

Between 1986 and 1989, Candlemass released a run of albums that would become essential pillars of the genre. Beginning with the debut Epicus Doomicus Metallicus (1986), followed by Nightfall (1987) and later Tales of Creation (1989), these records shaped the blueprint for epic doom — slow, towering compositions carried by expressive vocals, melodic lead guitars and a dark, majestic sense of scale.
